THURSDAY, JUNE 4. 1801. A "Eolatcd" Infldel. Somo month ngo Mr. Ucrt W. Huff man puhlished an article in Tin: Scout aooueing mo of falsehood in misrepresenting Col. 15. G.-Ingertoll in n sermon I preached. Thin articlo is written to disabuse the mind of the public as to my verac ity. I halt- falsehood and misrepresenta tion in every placo at home, in busi ness and especially in the pulpit. I Jiavp always beon very careful not to cxaggonUe .or make any statement without good authority what would bo rvgrdrJ as good evidence in any conn of justice. And whoever accuses mo of falsehood or misrepresentation is himself false. I am in the habit of reading Tin: Scout, but after reading one or two of U. II.'s articles, concluded they wore not worth reuding. I want to read only what is written by an intelligent person. So 1 did not know of his at tack until a frionti accidentally men tioned it, somo weeks after it was printed. That very day I wrote to the lawyer, who told me, what 1 said of Ingorsoll in Jho f-oruiun. He is one of the oldest and best respected attorneys in Hanlsburg. His reply was a long private letter, saying that "no one de nies that Ingersoll was on a spree and that ho was indicted, etc." I also wrote to Judge Abney, asking him whether ho know that what he wrote to U. II. was true; whether ho was at llarrisburg at tho time of tho said affray; and if ho was, how old he was, etc., and afked him to inquire as to facts in the case. Mr. Abney was not tho Judge when I left llarrisburg, and ho did not live there, unless it was for a short timo before I left. Hut. I was confident that ho did not intentionally misrepresent tho afl'air. This is his reply : llAituiHiumn, 111, Fob. 2-1, 1S!)1. lti:v. J. W. IluuiiKH, Union, Oregon. JJijaii Silt: Yours of the 11th re ceived in duo time. Ingorsoll never lived at llarrisburg, but ho did attend court heie. If 1 told Mr. Iliiil'inaii that tho indictment was quashed 1 was perhaps wrong, but I know noth ing at all about tho matter of my own personal knowledge because it was one of the few events that had taken place before i was born. I have it from the best information that I can get that H. G. I. was not arrested at the tilne, nor fliil It.) Innvn I own to avoid arrest. Jitit. ho afterwards gave "Hail," but the cabo waB never prosecuted against ami and tho witnosMs of tho a 11 ray arc "all dead and gone. Hoping that this in formation may bo of some benefit to you, 1 am, Very Truly Yours, A. G. AllNKY. If 1 stopped with this I would have beon as mipurfieial in researches as J). II. is, relying on a wituoss who ac knowledges that ho "knows nothing at all about tho mutter of his own person al knowledge" I then wrote to tho county clerk, asking him to send mo a copy of tho indictment, etc. This is a part, of his roply: llAititisituna, 111., March (5, 181)1. llo (Ingorsoll) was arretted, gave bonds, but failed to appear and a forfeiture was taken, but novor paid. Tho facts can bo ascertained from tho clork of tho oirouit court, Thos. Y, Itoynoltls. Vory Truly Yours, Jamks II. Pkahck. Thon I wroto to Mr. Hoynolds, oller ing to pay him for his troublo if ho would sond mo a copy of tho indict ment and a full account of tho whole allnir. Aftor waiting in vain for a roply for a fow weeks, I wroto again and recoived tho following letter: llAititiHiiuito, 111., May 18, 1891. ltBV. W. J. Uranus, Union Oregon. Ui:.u Sin: Yours of tho 12th re ceived and in answer will say that Kobort G. Ingorsoll was indicted in this court, at tho spring term thereof, A IV I Kill, for nit assault to do a bodi ly injury and tho caso was continued from torm to term until the September term, A. 1). 1800, when it was stricken from tho dockot. I will say that tho troublo camo tip botween Ingorsoll and an old gentleman that was intoxicated at tho time, and he, Ingorsoll, drew out his lenifo, and tho grand jury being in session at tho time, and somo of tho body scoing tho troublo, Ingorsoll was indicted. 1 will say that if this will answor your purposo, I charge nothing for this. Yours Truly, Thomah Y. Ki:ynoi.1)H. 1 recoived a letter from him again last Monday, saying that ho found my lottor of March 12th hioh ho had 'laid asido and forgot to answer, llo also said that ho would hunt up tho indictment, etc., and send it to mo if necessary. Hut why tliould I mention a crimo committed to long ago? May Ingor soll not ho a good man now? He bus improved in somo renpeots or lie would Jmvo boon In his crave before this. Hut if ho woto mow an haimt num. lie would go about and pay his old debts, or at least pay somo of them, andHry to scttlo or give satisfaction to those ho cannot pay. Does dishonesty mar tho character in Huffman's eyes? Or does he regard buying things and never paying for them one of Ingersoll's smart tricks? A year ago a sketch of Ingersoll's life was published in a paper at Peoria, 111., his homo for many years, accusing Ingorsoll of crimes. "Tho charges covered all tho sins of the catalogue." And none dared to contradict the statements. Now what do wo learn from those ' letters and narts of letters? 1st. In gorsoll in a drunken spreo attempted ' to stab a follow man and old genttc ; man who also was drunk. 2nd. In gorsoll was indicted and arrested and ' ho gave bail. 3d. Ingorsoll left llar risburg, "failed to appear and a forfeit ure was taken' but never paid." 4th. As actual stabbing and murder have been frequent in Saline county, Ingor soil's attempt to stab a fellow man was i vicious, or ho would not have been ! arrested. His failure to appear at his 1 trial also shows that he was dishonest and feared to be convicted. Now how does this differ from my ' statements in tho sermon? The only ,' difference is that I, repealing tho words I of an attorney whoso veracity and ' knowledge I had no reason to doubt, said that Ingorsoll lied, instead of say ing that he was arrested and gave bail and leaving tho county forfeited bis bail. My friend perhaps was wrong in saying that ho lied. And if in repeal ing it I wronged Col. Ingorsoll, 1 beg his pardon. Hub according to my opinion, to forfeit his bail was worse than if ho had succeeded in escaping at first. For thus ho added dishonesty to his first crime. There are others who call such forfeiture of bail, "flee ing." Now lot us glance at 13. Huffman's mistakes and falsehoods. 1st. Lack of judgment and falsehood. Ho said respecting mo, "so shifted he from his text." I did not shift from my text. My subject was "Tho Manifestation of Christ in his I'eoplo." Ono of these manifestations is true nobility of char acter. 1 brought up Ingorsoll only as an illustration of tho fact that man without the aid of Christ does not at tain to "nobility of characlor." This was tho negativo side of my text. I have no ill will toward Ingorsoll nor toward any other person, christian or infidel. His oft repeated and stale falsehoods make me pity him and bis dupes, who by tho way are getting fewer. Many infidels in tho Kant ro- gard Ingorsoll as a hypocrite, that ho knows that what ho gays is not true. 2nd, Falsehood. Ho wroto that I said that "ho (Ingorsoll) would bo tried and probably imprisoned for a long term." 1 did say, relying on the testi mony of an attorney, that he would bo tried if he returned to llarrisburg. But 1 f(i not nay that ho would "prob ably bo imprisoned." .'Id, Mistake. Ho inferred that I said that Ingorsoll lived at llarrisburg. I did not say so, but that "ho began his law career there." Judge Abney also toatilies that Ingorsoll "attended court there." Ho lived in a villago near llarrisburg and went thoro to attend court. 1th, Mistake. He repeated Judge Abnoy's error in saying that tho in dictmont against Ingersoll was "at onco quashed." fith, Falsehood. Ho Raid that I said things intended to mislead people This is utterly false. I preach noth ing but tho truth. 1 have studied the doctrine and lives of inltdols as well as tho doctrines of tho Bible and the history of tho church. 1 load none but to tho truth, in science and his tory as woll as in roligious doctrines. When you hear mo speak, you may know that it is tho truth whothor ele gantly spoken or not. 1 always know what 1 am talking about. 0th, Falsehood. Ho slandored min isters in general, saying, "a man never will know tho truth if they ho depend s on such sources as those iloating tales often quoted in tho pul pit." Ministers aro not in tho habit of quoting "floating lalos" to tho det riment of a porsou's character. It is a sin to accuse a man of wrong doing without good ovidonce. 'So every sentence in H. Hulfman's articlo is a misroproHintation and false hood. He would do woll to study somo before writing any more articles for the papers. Such compositions as. his infamous articlo on "Bradlaugh" whero he calls Jesus a "myth," disgust intelligent roaders and aro a disgrace to his follow inlldels as well as to him self. Every student of history, infidel, mohammoduu, buddhist, as woll as christian, of the present day, boliores that Jesus Christ lived ami was cruci fied in l'aloetino. Intelligent inlldels oftho pi oon t day aro not far from lht truth.
